Gr 5 Up—In march of 2013, Pope Francis was elected Bishop of Rome and worldwide leader of the Catholic Church. This documentary, produced by the Knights of Columbus, begins with the white smoke from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel chimney announcing his election, then travels to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for interviews with the new pope's fellow clergy, a biographer, and friends. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born to an Italian immigrant family. Young Jorge attended public school, played soccer, and enjoyed dancing, especially the tango. During confession, Jorge heard God's call and soon entered the Jesuit seminary. As a priest, he walked and rode public transportation to the neighborhoods of the poor and sick. His humility, work ethic, and intelligence attracted the attention of his superiors, and his rise to cardinal began. As pope, Jorge took the name of St. Francis, a saint who renounced a life of privilege to care for the destitute. During Argentina's Dirty War, some thought him a Communist sympathizer when nonpartisan humanitarian concerns were his agenda. (The pope and many interviewed speak in Italian, but easy-to-read English captions are provided.) This is an inspiring portrayal certain to hold the attention of both students and adults.—Mary Lee Bulat, Harwinton Public Library, CT
