Gr 10 Up—It has been said that many people are one crisis away from homelessness. This documentary features homeless persons in Los Angeles telling their stories as they respond to an interviewer's questions. Many of the individuals profiled are educated, although some are dealing with drug abuse, alcoholism, or severe mental illness, with most women and some men fleeing some form of domestic violence. In addition, a rally to end homelessness is highlighted, along with a conversation with a police officer about solutions to the problem. The last few minutes of the film features homeless individuals talking about the 2016 presidential election and only tangentially relates to the main issue; this will date the film rather quickly. The quality of filming is generally good, although it is sometimes difficult to understand the person speaking; there is no closed captioning.
VERDICT The documentary may be of interest in public libraries or in secondary social science or film/multimedia classes.
