Gr 2-4–This new series entry, which aims to help children learn about the importance of the environment, spotlights various forests around the world. Readers are first introduced to the different types of forests, their inhabitants, and the products derived from them. The second and third chapters are devoted to the cause and effects of planned, accidental, and illegal deforestation. The text offers solutions and ways humans can help combat deforestation. The back matter includes an extensive glossary. Each colorful page contains tips and facts, along with short paragraphs of information. Mostov’s illustrations are realistic but sweet, contrasting with the scientific information. Throughout the book, people of various cultures and nationalities are represented, including Indigenous people whose lives have been uprooted by deforestation. Although the causes and effects of deforestation can be overwhelming, the final chapters about activism are encouraging and could inspire children to pursue related careers.
VERDICT An inspiring read that will motivate a larger audience, including parents and teachers, to learn about keeping forests alive. Similar reads include the nonfiction illustrated series “Nature All Around” by Pamela Hickman and “Atlas Of,” written by various authors.
