Toddler-PreS–It’s the first Christmas on the farm for the filly, calf, and piglet. In this snowy tale, the three young anthropomorphic farm animals view human Christmas activities with wonder and curiosity. Old sheepdog introduces the baby animals to old-fashioned Christmas traditions, from ice skating to tree harvesting and going for a ride in a one-horse open sleigh. The animals see all the traditions from afar or through a window until Christmas morning, when they are included in the gift giving with presents of apples, carrots, a dog bone, and a cowbell. The cartoon-style artwork features beautiful holiday scenery, complete with snow and flakes floating down. Readers and listeners alike can search for squirrels in the greenery and for a cardinal observing the farm family from a snowy bough. Berry-Byrd’s farm family of a dad, mom, and three kids appears white; they are portrayed working together as they decorate the Christmas tree, sing carols, and skate.
VERDICT A sweetly light Christmas read that doesn’t mention Santa or the Nativity.
