Gr 7 Up—With vocational and life skills generally not taught in secondary schools, this volume fills a gap. Arranged in bite-size passages that cover everything from short-term budgeting and juvenile employment laws to emancipation, post–foster care independent living, and career planning, the information is drawn from federal documents and the publisher's proprietary work. In addition to discussing hard skills, the book addresses topics such as the intellectual development needed to handle increasingly complex situations, stress responses on the job, financial planning problems, and more. There are some editing oversights, such as referencing a chart that isn't in evidence, but overall, the flow is smooth and the detailed index makes finding information on different subjects easy. Young researchers will find practical advice and a good source for government and current events assignments.
VERDICT A superb addition for school and public libraries that serve teenagers.–Francisca Goldsmith, Library Ronin, Worcester, MA
