PreS-Gr 2–Another addition to the “Farmer Falgu” series, this book is the story of a girl and her father traveling to the Kite Festival in Rajasthan, India. Along the way, the wind begins to gather speed, tearing Eila’s kite from the cart! Not to worry, her father, Farmer Falgu, assures her that he has brought more than enough kites with him for the festival. As their journey continues Elia and her father pick up more passengers, and the wind gets stronger and stronger. When they finally arrive, every kite they had has either been stolen by the wind or destroyed. Luckily, Farmer Falgu is a resourceful man, creating a new, even better kite from the materials at hand. As a gentle breeze blows, the farmer, Elia, and their friends enjoy their new kite. An endnote explains the Kite Festival and how it is traditionally celebrated. The illustrations are bold, highlighting the vibrant colors of the kites and the characters’ clothing.
VERDICT A welcome seasonal addition to any primary library, especially where books that celebrate Indian culture are needed.
