Gr 2-4–This guide to endangered animals showcases animals native to a variety of biomes. The beginning pages explain the categories of risk and how scientists label a species based on how severe its decline has become. Each double-spread provides a description of the biome and features an arrow starting in the left-hand corner and rising to the right. The animals listed along the line are ordered from the least or lowest level of endangerment to fully extinct. On the next page, the animals organized along the arrow are portrayed in a full-page illustration of their biome. Details about the biome and the leading factors that cause endangerment (deforestation, climate change, and pollution) can be found on the left. Each page gives readers a challenge, for example, to reduce water consumption, plant a tree, or cut back on the use of plastics. Animals are illustrated in four solid colors: Prussian blue, cerulean, apricot, or magenta. The full-page illustration is depicted in one of these colors; plants and the spotlighted animals are hidden among the foliage. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to the color-coding of the animals.
VERDICT A book that better serves as a browsable overview rather than an in-depth exploration of endangered animals.
