Gr 3-6–The Greco-Aiden family has moved to the city of R because their old country elected a president who believes families like theirs, ones with two moms and three kids, are illegal. Hoping for a fresh start, they arrive in the new town just days before Christmas, but soon realize that all of the adults are distinctly unfriendly. Luckily, a very social and forthcoming little girl named Olivia explains to them that the mayor of R, the aptly named “Doctor Dull,” has instructed all adults that the only way to keep bad things from happening is to not let anything happen at all. Undaunted, this tight-knit family continues to get ready for the holiday. A letter arrives written by Santa himself explaining that he desperately needs help and wonders if they would allow 10 elves to come over for a massive gift-wrapping event. On Christmas Eve, the elves appear and everyone gets to work. Things go sideways when the moms are arrested, and it is up to the children to show the grown-ups the true meaning of Christmas.
VERDICT A cozy Christmas novel by the “Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls” author that stresses acceptance and community, this is a good choice for middle grade shelves.
