Toddler-K–A little Black girl beams with delight as she wakes on Easter morning to find a basket brimming with treats. With freshly braided hair and carefully buckled shoes, the girl is outfitted in a pale yellow dress and ready for her family’s big Easter brunch. After their meal, the parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles head outside to watch young cousins scamper around the yard in hot pursuit of hidden eggs. Smith touches on all of the quintessential secular Easter traditions in simple rhyming text. Illustrations are rich with detail, but because of their digital rendering they lack a bit of life. In some scenes, the characters have a frozen-in-time stiffness that depletes the celebratory joy trademark of holiday celebrations.
VERDICT A worthwhile title for collections looking for diverse representation in holiday preparations and traditions.
