PreS-Gr 1—Doing good takes practice, as the brother and sister demonstrate throughout this early comic for pre-readers. A series of scenarios are presented in which the siblings could choose to make a poor choice—fighting over possessions, screaming and shouting, taunting and teasing—but instead resolve the situations on each page turn by choosing to "do good." The metered rhyming text allows kids to predict each outcome, and the illustrations depict emotive characters, displaying not only the right choice in terms of doing good but also how each decision, right or wrong, makes each character feel. The paneled illustrations are brightly colored and easy to read from a distance, making the book ideal for either one-on-one sharing or group read alouds. Likewise, the guiding text and speech bubbles use a large typeface that maintains the look and feel of a comic book. A "How to read this comic" note for grown-ups is also included on the book's title page.
VERDICT This will make a great addition to collections about manners; it's also a fun introduction to the comic book format for the youngest readers.
