Gr 6–8—Diversity breeds awareness, acceptance, innovation, and cooperation while dispelling bias and stereotypes. Promoting it can be complicated. In-depth statistics provide the groundwork for representation across a variety of industries based on race, gender, socioeconomic situation, culture, and varied abilities. Numerous two-page features spotlight the achievements of noted individuals within each marginalized community. The importance of showcasing diversity to children is emphasized. Changing public perceptions and government legislation are examined, as is the "melting pot" theory of American culture. The nuances between race, ethnicity, and culture are also explained. Inclusive hiring practices across a number of industries are addressed, too. The metrics are eye-opening; Small's all-encompassing inclusivity is refreshing. Unfortunately, while the contributions from the disabled and LGBTQ+ community are acknowledged, it feels slightly lacking in comparison to that of other groups.
VERDICT Book buyers cannot go wrong with this inclusive look at our diverse populations.
