Toddler-PreS–In a series of strained and awkward rhymes, readers learn that diggers spend their school days scooping blocks while road rollers “create truck mural art” and electric trucks “listen silently to books that spark imaginations.” Irregularities in the meter make it cumbersome to read aloud, and the school theme feels like an afterthought. The yellow school bus on the cover is the only part of this book that resembles a child’s school experience: There are no classrooms and no obvious teachers, and the illustrations do little to fill in the gaps. Each of the brightly colored anthropomorphic vehicles has the same grinning facial expression, regardless of the activity it is engaged in. Children who want to know what to expect at school will not gain any understanding from this unwieldy offering, but those who devour truck books will probably enjoy it anyway.
VERDICT With stilted rhymes and a pasted-on school theme, nothing makes this stand out from the endless sea of vehicle books.
