The lucky students of South Whidbey Island, WA, and their farming project are the stars of this absorbing film. Students from kindergarten through high school are immersed in organic gardening: they eat the vegetables they grow for their school lunches and give the surplus to a food bank and sell some as well. With support from the school district administration and teaching staff, they have shown that hands-on learning in the garden can be used to teach to education standards and fulfill curriculum requirements. This undertaking has also fostered healthy eating habits. Engaged and enthusiastic kids and teachers are shown tending the garden, conducting various measurements and experiments, and happily munching on the fruits of their labor.
VERDICT An innovative education idea beautifully presented. Educators will benefit from seeing this film and incorporating its ideas into their own practice; older elementary and middle school students may enjoy it as well.
