Craft in America: Borders and Neighbors

Gr 9 Up—This video provides a timely presentation on the cultural influences of art. The primary focus of this two-part presentation features artists from both sides of the border, Mexico and United States, and demonstrates how they have come together to learn from one another. Viewers are introduced to outstanding artists in various areas, such as tapestry, pottery, paper crafts, jewelry, and murals as each narrates about the impact that heritage and traveling to places like Oaxaca, have had on the artists' careers and creative talents. All agreed that art crosses borders easily, connecting communities and cultures. Cultural celebrations in California—Day of the Dead, and the Guelaguetza parade in Los Angeles—are spotlighted along with the artistic preparation for these citywide events. In addition to various well-known artists, viewers will learn of some notable art museums, such as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and the Textile Museum in Oaxaca. By the conclusion, it is clear these artists advocate for fewer borders so that communities can learn and grow from the love of art.
