Gr 3–5—These volumes provide generally engaging introductions to wild canines. Sections discuss different species and subspecies, with a photographic example of each. The canine family in general is not described in any of the titles, which is disappointing given the series name. Pack behavior, pup-rearing, and hunting strategies are all introduced through smooth, flowing text and a variety of useful images. Full-page photographs are mixed in with smaller spot photos that highlight particular features or behaviors. There's a nice mix between still portraits and scenes of the animals in action, though the lack of pack hunting scenes is a notable weakness in
Coyotes and
Wolves. Captions support many photos, and a "That's Wild" insert adds extra facts to complement the more straightforward text.
