Gr 3–6—Despite their titles, these books are not hands-on, day-in-the-life profiles of individuals in each of the named professions. Rather, they provide an overview of the requirements of each job, sprinkling in some vocabulary, a few activities, and a reasonable description of the specializations within each career. Children interested in cooking will learn that culinary school is not the only path to a commercial kitchen, while potential architects find out that in addition to college, they'll have to pass a monster of an exam—after having interned at an architecture firm. Soft skills (teamwork, listening, leadership) are listed as well as academic proficiency. In each volume, stock photos of adults accompany the basic text, and the back matter includes a rather dated list of resources.
VERDICT Though the set is less interactive than the name would suggest, it still could be a serviceable addition to most collections.
