Along with him, there's a border collie dashing into its owner's arms, a man tenderly touching the belly of a pregnant woman, tight embraces, and comradely photo shoots. Ruth's skillful depiction of a variety of people simultaneously experiencing joyful reunions culminates in a wildly exuberant "MOM!" as the boy spots the person he's been searching for. A young boy waits at the airport for a military parent's return home. He watches various soldiers reunite with their families; finally he sees his mom in uniform and joyfully runs to give her a hug. The almost wordless text is accompanied by spare illustrations that effectively convey a child's emotions when a deployed parent returns home.
