Gr 8 Up—Alice, Dakota, Benny, and Jason are students at Haverford Friends, a prestigious Philadelphia prep school. When the headmaster embezzles the school's entire $50 million endowment, funds are suspended for all student activities, scholarships are eliminated, and even the senior prom is in jeopardy. These four students from different social spheres band together with a plan to refill the school coffers by robbing the U.S. Mint. Both the story line and the narration (provided by Kevin T. Collins, Christian Rummel, Emily Bauer, and Holly Cate) fall flat.
VERDICT Libraries should consider this a secondary purchase. ["Despite the fairly stock characters, the planned heist is original, and the ending quite unpredictable. The teens' voices are authentic, using a lot of American slang, and inject some sexual innuendos": SLJ 8/14 review of the Adaptive book.]
