PreS-Gr 2—This rip-roaring tale begs to be read aloud. The animals' lives on a boring Texas farm are all work and no play. Then, the hilarious rooster catches a jitterbug, and a rollicking dance begins. "This jitterbug's contagious;/boogie fever's catchin' on./The others follow Rooster's lead/to doodle-dance at dawn." After rocking out all night the barnyard is bushed and the farm is in disarray. Rooster again takes the lead, calling for a "Cock-a-Doodle Clean Up!" Deas's illustrations enliven the already busy, bopping story, which is sure to be a storytime and classroom hit. A glossary contains dancing terminology to clarify the farmyard friends' fancy footwork.—Alison Donnelly, Mississippi Valley Library District, Collinsville, IL
A pompadoured rooster bored by the barnyard scene catches "a jitterbug," which launches a "Cock-a-Doodle DANCE!" that gets all the farm animals busting a move--and neglecting their work. Despite outward appearances (the caricaturish art is semi-grotesque), the snappy rhymes carry the message that work should be balanced by play (and vice versa).
