K-Gr 3—Narrator Randy Travis's deep twang lends the perfect voice for the four stories rereleased in this collection, all based on picture books by author Doreen Cronin and illustrator Betsy Lewin. Lewin's art is fully animated by MaGiK Studio and accompanied by a rich soundtrack chock-full of farm sounds, including Little Duck's voice, which is reminiscent of Donald Duck. Banjo, fiddle, and guitar music by Scotty Huff and Robert Reynolds provide a jaunty backdrop for the action and switches to decidedly tropical music depicting Farmer Brown on vacation. The farm animals, led by Little Duck, continually outwit Farmer Brown. In the first story, "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type," the animals strike until Farmer Brown gives in to their demand for an electric blanket and a diving board. Credits roll to the beat of typewriter keys. "Giggle, Giggle, Quack" opens with Farmer Brown's brother Bob taking over farm duties while the farmer vacations. Brown's detailed written instructions are replaced by Little Duck, who instructs Bob to serve the animals pizza, bathe the pigs in the farmer's tub, and host a movie night. "Duck for President" and "Dooby Dooby, Moo" round out the quartet of stories, chronicling Little Duck's political career and the animals' participation in the county fair talent show unbeknownst to Farmer Brown. An insightful bonus interview with Cronin and Lewin and a learning guide are also included.
VERDICT Public and school libraries will find these humorous stories entertaining and useful as springboards for creative discussions.
