K-Gr 3—Though this illustrated atlas lacks full-color photos, it offers a free-spirited approach to learning about animals around the world. Stickers, postcards, a poster, and a passport-like "spotter's guide" add an interactive element but may be problematic for libraries. Brightly colored, cartoonish maps depict creatures from 13 regions, as well as biomes and short facts ("fastest predator," "greatest land carnivore") that will have kids eager to learn more.
VERDICT It's a cursory look, best paired with a more complete, photographic atlas. But this is a surefire way to introduce both geography and the animal kingdom to early elementary age students.
