PreS-Gr 1—Rueben and Felix are next-door neighbors and best friends. They both love to blow bubbles but become quite competitive and cutthroat when they try to outdo each other in a bubble-blowing contest. Friendship triumphs over competition in the end. The illustrations are bright, cheerful, and colorful, but the fun interactive component—lift-the-flap bubbles—is almost as fragile and vulnerable as the real thing. The word choice is slightly advanced for the target audience, but the book would work as a read-aloud.
VERDICT A lively choice that needs to be kept aside for programming. Have plenty of bubble juice on hand!

Reuben and Felix have much in common--especially a love of blowing big bubbles. The animals' friendship takes a competitive turn when each tries to out-bubble the other. They appoint judges, build more and more complex bubble-blowing machines, and resort to cheating. The saccharine lesson? If they work together, they both win. The pastel-toned illustrations include bubble-shaped flaps and some imaginative touches.
