Bo y la clase de poesía

Gr 1-3–A fun Spanish-language chapter book series that follows the daily adventures of Bo, who lives with his grandfather Pop-Pop above his grandfather’s barbershop, The Buzz. In Bo y el juego de baloncesto, Bo is sure he will be the star of his new basketball team. When he is discouraged because his basketball throws fail to make it into the basket, his grandfather calls a surprising friend who shows Bo there are many different positions and ways to play in basketball. In Bo y el matón de la escuela, Bo defends his friend from the school bully Quincy, who then turns his sights on Bo. The title characters reaches out to Pop-Pop, who gives him some important advice. In Bo y la casa escalofriante, Bo and his friends think a house in their neighborhood is haunted, but when Pop-Pop reveals the truth, Bo decides to take positive action with his friends and neighbors. And in Bo y la clase de poesía, Bo is not excited to write a poem for class. But when Pop-Pop asks barbershop customer Darius to help Bo, the boy realizes that poetry is all around---even in the music he loves. Each title opens with an introduction to Bo, his family, friends, and The Buzz barbershop and contains short chapters with colorful illustrations depicting the activities in Bo’s everyday life. Bo often finds positive encouragement and advice at The Buzz from Pop-Pop and has a thoughtful, kind relationship with his schoolmates. Bo and his grandfather are Black.
VERDICT This Spanish-language chapter book series includes relatable characters and stories and is a solid selection for school and public libraries.
