PreS-K–The very original black and white silhouetted work of the late, great Tana Hoban has been fused with Getty stock full-color photographs so that those who grew up on her startling images and high concepts can pass along these ideas to their own progeny. It’s more of a reshuffling than, say, some of the Frankenstein-like surgery performed on Ted Geisel’s beloved characters, and perhaps that’s because Hoban worked in concepts more than stories and personalities. These baby’s-first-board-book-objects of outlined negatives contrast nicely with the cherubic faces of real babies: stark duck-like image versus a rubber ducky, or relief of baby bottle next to a child with milk bottle, in domestic settings.
VERDICT Welcome a new generation into the Hoban household and help them over the threshold into the land of Lillian Hoban and Russell, too.
