Gr 1–3 - These series cover "the important process of defining problems, asking questions, conducting investigations, and gathering data to develop real solutions." Each segment provides an introduction, details about the topic, a video review, and a five-question quiz. The videos are also broken up into short sections that include "you decide" questions—several seconds are given to allow viewers to form an answer. "Green Planet" examines "practical, easy to accomplish tasks we can do to make Earth a healthier place." "Science Practices" covers "the important process of defining problems, asking questions, conducting investigations, and gathering data to develop real solutions." This series features some obvious staging: a boy sitting at a table about to ask a question comes across as awkward (
Starting with Questions), and the spilling of a glass of blue liquid is visibly not accidental (
Describing Problems). Both series feature a female narrator with a beautiful speaking voice, but the overall material is dry, and the lack of any activity or action may not engage viewers. However, the presentations provide solid discussion points for teachers, and the written content is also helpful, offering a full lesson that includes objectives (a tie-in to Common Core would have been useful), assessments for before and after the video viewing, the entire script, answer keys, and several supplemental activities to extend the lesson. "Green Planet" could be useful in teaching environmental themes, and "Science Practices" could introduce the concept of the scientific method and serve as a supplement to science lessons.—
