PreS-Gr 1–In an adaptation based on an episode of the Netflix show
Not Quite Narwhal, Kelp and his unicorn friends are playing rainbow tag. Juniper is not playing because she cannot create rainbows with her unicorn spark. They later switch to playing rainbow bubble tag and swishbee, but Juniper, still feeling left out, steals the swishbee. Her friends help her understand that while feeling angry is okay, it’s not okay to disrupt others’ games. Each friend suggests a different coping mechanism, and after trying several, Juniper squeezes a stuffed animal, which helps her calm down and apologize. Terms like swishbee and concepts like unicorn spark might only resonate with fans of the show, slightly limiting the story’s accessibility. The illustrations, which appear to be taken directly from the show, are colorful and expressive, effectively conveying the characters’ emotions. Despite the potentially confusing terminology, this story serves as a solid introduction for children to understanding and managing their emotions.
VERDICT A valuable resource for teaching coping mechanisms and a well-executed adaptation, making it a good addition to large library collections.
