Gr 2–6-Carroll invites children to complete 20 different photography challenges. Each challenge features an example photo taken by a famous photographer, plus tips about how to make one's photograph unique. Carroll addresses perspective, point of view, portraiture, looking for the abstract, color, shadows, light, and more. After every five challenges, there's a "Nifty know-how" section addressing an important aspect of photography. Composition, light, type of cameras, and a history of photography are addressed. Each photograph includes the photographer's name and the year the photo was taken. The author also explains the decision making process for selecting the photos in the book. Children may recognize a few of the chosen examples, but many will likely be new to them.
VERDICT An engaging book for the beginning photographer. Recommended for elementary and middle school collections.-Lia Carruthers, Gill St. Bernard's School
