Gr 3-6–Jankeliowitch takes readers on a trip that covers the beginnings of the universe and then explores the characteristics and environments of the eight planets orbiting the Sun. The in-depth yet accessible descriptions of each planet are accompanied by beautiful full-page illustrations. Planetary profiles share well-known trivia, but also list facts such as the axes and rotations of each planet, the names of natural satellites, and the spacecraft sent to study them. Specifics about our solar system, including how and why we study space, famous exploration missions, and details about other celestial bodies are also explained. While the art and prose successfully work together to create an eye-catching and knowledgeable resource, the design of this oversized book impacts its durability. Large portions of the text are written on folding pages and flaps that can easily tear and rip. However, this layout may appeal to students looking for surprising or interesting information others may have missed.
VERDICT This title can easily find a place in a third to fifth grade classroom library for smaller circulation and gentler hands. A great space-related title that has some design issues.
