Gr 6-10–Banning books is nothing new, but the recent escalation of political divisiveness has brought it back into the forefront. Loonin provides a history of banned books, the types of books that are currently being targeted (race relations and LGBTQIA+), and the organizations and politicians that are leading the charge. By providing specific examples of banned books, legal controversies, and social movements, this resource is excellent for student research. It will intrigue them while providing plenty of facts to support their academic needs. Librarians and teachers will find plenty of situational examples for lessons on censorship. The layout includes sizable chapters with short subchapters that are accompanied by rectangular photographs and occasional text boxes. A table of contents, source notes, organizations and websites, further research, and an index are included.
VERDICT While not a standout for its visual appeal, the book’s writing will ensure that it is a solid research recommendation for the current controversy of banning books.
