Toddler-PreS–A series of gentle tableaux follows a baby hippopotamus as she experiences a sweet and relaxing day replete with activities recognizable to young children: swimming to cool off, playing with friends, foraging for a snack, and drifting off to sleep alongside her caring mother. The bright colors and smooth textures of Huang’s art support the endearingly fuzzy attached finger puppet (to be operated by an adult reader), which children will enjoy touching and feeling time and again.
VERDICT A simple but worthwhile book that encourages adult-child interaction through delightful puppet play.
