Baba’s Peach Tree

K-Gr 3–In this heartfelt story of growth, intergenerational care, and change Tau Hua and her baba show how “the things we nourish always flourish.” Growing up in rural China, Tau Hua and her father would tend their peach tree before heading to work and school. The peach tree brought gifts of bright pink petals and juicy fruit to enjoy and sell. When the tree stopped bearing fruit, the family moved to the city where there was more work and better schools. As years pass, the peach tree and seeds they planted continue to grow and so do they. Through her clear and gently paced writing, Tang expresses the reciprocity of nourishing relationships both with the people we love and with the earth. The author’s note shines light on the difficult work of migrant workers and how many of them sacrifice in the name of creating a better life for their children. Kim’s digital art resembles pencil drawings with intricate detail and fine line work. With stunning shifts of color, the art depicts changes in seasons and environments that pair perfectly with the text.
