PreS-Gr 2–In this quirky tale, Muir (
Can Cat and Bird Be Friends?) once again explores the possibility of friendship between two very different animals. A cat attempts to convince a dog that he is not a cat and cannot be chased. The cat pretends to be other animals such as a squirrel and a rabbit. Yet all the animals that the cat pretends to be are things a dog might chase in a yard, too. Eventually, the cat and dog find some common ground and show that cats and dogs can be friends, too. The simple, formulaic text makes this an accessible read for many young readers, while the high-contrast, cartoon-style illustrations pop with visual appeal.
VERDICT This delightful, tongue-in-cheek story offers young readers an opportunity to question expectations.
