Gr 5–8—This set offers a thorough, wide-ranging look at animal behavior. Logical organization, effective text, and strong visual support make in-depth information highly accessible. Broad topics are introduced, then explored through a rich variety of well-chosen examples. Animals Depending on Other Animals, for instance, examines behaviors of over a half dozen animals to reinforce reader understanding of commensalism. Each spread includes a large photo spanning two-thirds of a page, often with one or two captioned insets. A look at "Dealing with Snow and Ice," for example, features Adélie penguins tobogganing, along with spot images showing ermine camouflage and a caribou hoof. Each book includes several "Closer Look" spreads that focus on specific topics, such as "mating displays" or individual animals, such as wildebeest migration.
VERDICT This is an excellent presentation about animals and the ways they live, and a first-rate nonfiction series for older readers.
