PreS-Gr 1—This rhyming story portrays a mother cat's love for her child "as the seasons flow." With two spreads devoted to each season, the first-person narrative describes some of their favorite activities. Chorao's lush illustrations in gouache, colored pencils, and ink fill the pages with colorful pastel depictions of the momma and her kitten diving into a pile of autumn leaves, sledding down a winter slope, flying kites in the spring, watering summer blossoms, and celebrating the youngster's birthday in the fall. This cozy book would be a good choice for a storytime about the seasons as well as a comforting bedtime read.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT
Rhyming couplets express a feline mother's enduring love for her kitten throughout the year. The characters enjoy each season's highlights, including winter sledding, spring kite-flying, summer swimming, and autumn leaf-raking. The overly sweet verse paired with nostalgic gouache, colored-pencil, and ink illustrations add up to an uninspired, though warm-hearted, package.
