Gr 2-6–In Langholtz’s second cookbook for children, she and a team of 12 contributors with wide-ranging food knowledge have gathered 40 recipes from around the world. In selecting which countries to profile and recipes to include, they relied on the most populous countries from each of the six inhabited continents. Thus, Asia and Africa have the most recipes. The cookbook has clear organization throughout, and the continent, country, and food facts are well-summarized and interesting. Continents and countries are in alphabetical order. Fascinating cultural, geographical, and food facts are presented and enhanced by colorful drawings of the local crops, the unique architecture and cooking containers, and the animals that inhabit that locale. In addition to individual recipes, the team showcases how the same foods are used in different locations, e.g., “Eggs Around the World.” The difficulty of each recipe is rated. The beginning pages feature cooking tips, tools, terms, and information on how to stock an international pantry. Indices at the back allow readers to find recipes by level of difficulty or title.
VERDICT With the wish for young cooks to “seek out global flavors,” this team has created a beautiful and informative cookbook that will inspire children to find connections with cuisines and cultures around the world.
