Gr 1-4–As a young artist moves through a museum, she connects to a painting by the artist Florine Stettheimer on multiple levels—the subject of the painting looks like her, the artist is, as she is, Jewish. She wishes to find more of her art and to get to know Stettheimer more deeply. Stettheimer was a modernist artist, poet, and theatrical set designer in the early part of the 20th-century. Her art was warmly colored and had many distinctive images that are mentioned in the book: skinny cats, plump babies in giant strollers, or ladies lounging in white silk pants. Nayberg’s reimagining of the paintings is faithful and a little fanciful, giving readers a joyous new interpretation of Stettheimer’s work.
VERDICT This is a buoyant look at inspiration from those who have come before, and it’s a good choice for libraries needing books about artists and inspiration.
