K-Gr 3–In our increasingly divided society, kids need more encouragement than ever to feel good about their unique qualities and to accept others who seem different in some way. This book is earnest and well-intentioned about offering this kind of support. Brightly colored graphics and bold text set upon black-and-white backgrounds complement the theme of inclusion for people of all races, backgrounds, abilities, and economic status. The author uses a superhero reference to urge kids to consider themselves in a role that has traditionally been the province of only white, cisgender, nondisabled men. “Diversity is everything that makes you, you!” is a definition that is somewhat confusing, as diversity is not an individual trait but rather a condition achieved when a variety of individuals come together. Further refinement of the language would have been helpful, though other references such as the image of a kaleidoscope are effective.
VERDICT Somewhat preachy, this title is a serviceable tool for parents and teachers on a very important topic; it may function best when combined with a storybook on a similar theme to enhance lessons on diversity.
