K-Gr 3—Iggy is an accredited facility dog who helps children who have been abused navigate stressful and complicated emotions. The book shows Iggy, a lovable black dog; Maggie, his handler; and different kids interacting with him. Whether children are visiting the doctor, being interviewed by the police, or testifying in court, Iggy is there to console them. The subject matter can be uncomfortable; however, the text is gentle but straightforward ("Iggy always listened and let me know he was my friend—no matter what"). Bright full-page photographs reveal the amiable relationship between Iggy and the children, and graphics, like bones and paw prints, line the bottom of the pages. The volume ends with an explanation that Iggy is a real facility dog who works at the Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Center in Toronto, where he helps children aged three to 18.
VERDICT Warm text and cheery images make this accessible title a wonderful tool for children in need of emotional support.
