Gr 5–8—The narrative weaves the experiences of many minority groups who helped to shape this nation, most of whom have been left out of the Eurocentric narratives. The important observations are most relevant, given today's political climate. Strong narration by Fajer Al-Kaisi makes the work both authoritative and accessible. Al-Kaisi is especially adept at vocalizing quotations from people of a variety of ethnic groups, keeping accents and pronunciations accurate while adding to and developing the overall narrative.
VERDICT Recommended for middle and high school history teachers, secondary libraries, and all consumers of alternative historical perspectives.
