Gr 3-8–This venture into space with astronomer Regas from the Cincinnati Observatory is a smashing success. A table of contents and brief foreword encourages readers to browse subjects, which includes the study of planetary and other space matter, iconic missions, astronauts, urban legends, and living in space. Brilliant photography accompanies the topics across each spread, with graphic design that is clean in its titling and overall layout. Facts are highlighted by a border or shape, allowing readers’ eyes to move over and through the text. One topic, “25 Famous Facts About Great Astronomers,” illustrates ancient and modern women and men from different cultures. The selection of topics and facts are refreshing, by turns informative and simply fun, such as discovering that “John Young smuggled in a corned beef sandwich in his space suit” in the 1960s. A glossary, index, and list of further resources is included.
VERDICT This is a must for every library and a reminder that children have always looked to the stars.
