K-Gr 4—The history of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team is enumerated in this fun, fact-filled picture book. Numbers from one to 100 (increasing by increments of ones, then fives, then 10s) are introduced by brief rhyming couplets that highlight the team's logo, famous players, and championship games. While at times the verse is strained ("NINE times the Leafs were able to say/their rookie was better than any other to play/and won this award to start his career:/It's the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year"), the accompanying informational text succinctly elaborates on the highlighted topic. Rose's oil paintings prominently feature the team's trademark blue and white colors and realistically capture the energy of hockey games and the excitement of fans.
VERDICT Sports aficionados will cheer for this well-designed combination of counting and trivia. Recommended for collections that serve hockey buffs.
