Though this won’t explain the holiday to newcomers, Jewish families will welcome the engaging plot and simple lesson. This fun title would be a great addition to any library wishing to expand its books on Jewish holidays.
The story is mildly amusing but the Chanukah aspect of the story seems to be nearly beside the point. Its impact does not outweigh the missteps. Pass on this one.
This version somewhat softens the harshness of the original tale but the specificity of the setting and various additions make it less broadly appealing.
This welcome addition to the Jewish holiday bookshelf will pair nicely with Sylvia B. Epstein's How the Rosh Hashanah Challah Became Round and Jacqueline Jules's The Hardest Word: A Yom Kippur Story.
