Toward a Better Future | Editorial Series Nonfiction

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many children have had to adapt to distance learning and changes to their everyday life. In this season’s Series Made Simple, selectors will find books to help young readers articulate their feelings, as well as titles that examine the virus and the effort to create a vaccine. We cover perennial subjects, too, including animals big and small, fascinating natural wonders of the world, timely biographies, and a bevy of sports.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many children have had to adapt to distance learning and changes to their everyday life. In this season’s Series Made Simple, selectors will find books to help young readers articulate their feelings, as well as titles that examine the virus and the effort to create a vaccine. In the piece on jobs, essential workers receive long overdue attention. The STEM projects in the arts and crafts and science sections would be great enrichment activities.

Racial and social injustice and the climate crisis also receive much-needed attention this season. There are titles that address racism in the United States and continued efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement, and books for readers who want to make their voices heard. Topics on climate change include examinations of its effects and advice for kids on making mindful, eco-friendly choices.

We cover perennial subjects, too, including animals big and small, fascinating natural wonders of the world, timely biographies, and a bevy of sports. There are books for budding astronomers, enticing reads for the gaming-obsessed, and excellent Spanish-language titles. Librarians will find selections at a variety of reading levels, including hi-lo titles to engage new and striving readers.

We hope Series Made Simple is a useful resource, especially in this trying time. We also hope that you stay safe and healthy.
