Working Things Out

Gr 4—7—This engaging video discusses conflict resolution in a format that makes viewers feel like they are watching a video blog. Featuring a middle school age host, the program explains how to avoid fights and arguments with friends and classmates. Recommendations include getting the facts before jumping to conclusions, listening without interrupting, compromising by finding a solution that everyone can agree to, and telling people your feelings using "I messages." Diverse tween actors present realistic situations in which conflict can occur, and solutions are presented via hypothetical scenarios and by discussing how to positively handle difficult situations. While the young performers are somewhat unconvincing in their stiff and emotionless portrayals, the content and presentation is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school guidance classes.—Cynthia Grabke, Coakley Middle School, Norwood, MA
