PreS-Gr 2–Demonstrating simple poses to help process strong emotions, this book offers children (and their adults) different ways to experience feelings when they overflow. From a tree pose to focus scattered thinking to a happy baby pose to help get the giggles out, readers can unite their bodies, breaths, and minds. Beautiful photographs of children of many races are overlaid with vivid graphic illustrations of animals, movement, and nature. The combination makes this book pop with personality but can also make it visually overwhelming. The rhyming text seems forced at times and simplistic for the younger end of the target age group but is an appropriate level to support beginning readers. A spread at the end of the book provides a look at all included yoga poses and their physical/emotional benefits. Understandable and brief, these explanations are better left to adults to explain to children, given the use of words like “parasympathetic.” Although this book is cute, it tries to be too many different things to too broad an audience and loses much of its impact.
VERDICT With so many children’s yoga books on the market, this is an additional purchase.
