Gr 2-4–What kind of trouble can two bickering pigs get into? Pick and Pocket have huge appetites for food and robbery. Even though they visit prison as punishment for their crimes, they find ways to escape, only to be caught by Inspector Joe the dog. He is usually at the right place at the right time to trap the villains for their misdeeds. Although high in adventure, the narrative is so rushed, and the panels on each page feel so overwhelming that it is hard to get invested in the story or characters. The chapter format, as well as the questions and statements at the end of each chapter, attempt to engage readers, but can’t compensate for what feels chaotic and undeveloped through the remainder of the tale. The artwork demonstrates a strong color palette with a focus on the vivid pink of the pigs. Panels are packed with detail and other high-interest animals like sharks, cats, llamas, etc.
VERDICT The pig duo offers some humor and quick adventure, but there are many stronger buddy story graphic novel options to purchase first.
