K-Gr 2—When the narrator's mother goes to cooking school, she begins creating horrific food. Monday's fare is "French Fried Feet of a Frog." Tuesday is even worse with "Simmering Skin of a Skunk" on the menu. With each day's comestibles getting more peculiarly disgusting, the little girl follows her mother to class and discovers that Mom has been attending a school…for witches! The woman is suitably horrified and comes home to make some ordinary macaroni and cheese. The cartoon illustrations lend fun to the proceedings, with their angular perspectives and extravagantly gross interpretations of the awful cuisine. However, while the concept is amusing, the execution leaves something to be desired. The rhyme is forced and doesn't always scan well, and the one-note joke at the end falls a bit flat.—Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI
