Gr 4 Up—This simple, attractive book of infographics presents topics related to space: the universe, stars, planets, observing space, and exploration. Each of the seven chapters is color-coded and tabbed for quick page-turning. Though this title is fairly light on material, many infographics easily put concepts in perspective and will stay with students long after they've finished reading, such as a section that compares the planets to different fruits. Featuring bright, neon colors and a variety of font sizes, a few infographics are busy, and in places the book needs to be turned around to read the text. The spread on the Big Bang employs seven different colors, presented in a swirl across the page with details of explosions, stars forming, and astronauts playing, all alongside the text in bubbles throughout. Similarly packed pages may pose a challenge, as it isn't always clear in which order the infographic should be read.
VERDICT Although the content lacks substantial detail for school reports, the vibrant design will be a draw for some, and the infographics help put the enormity of space into perspective.
