Gr 5 Up—This program is an excellent resource for teaching youth how to correctly and safely interact with the police. While the whole program is intended for those with special needs, it is appropriate for regular classrooms as well. The narrator is very explicit in stating that the information provided is not a substitute for legal advice, and numerous reenacted scenarios provide accurate portrayals of step-by-step procedures when getting stopped by cops. One tip: follow the directions of the police, and never run from them. Though the program doesn't address dealing with bad cops, the various scenarios are very helpful. Vocabulary terms are well defined, and the video can be used for a wide range of grades, since there are many talking points that can be taught. An accompanying disc provides curriculum material. However, the DVD can be used on its own to generate discussion and to connect current news and real-life situations to what is being taught. While some students may roll their eyes at some of the scenarios or dialogue, this is an important tool for today's classroom. Since appropriate interaction with figures of authority should not be assumed, it is important that educators begin to teach protocol and proactive behavior.
VERDICT Greater critical thinking skills and analysis can be fostered with the use of this program, especially in light of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and the death of Eric Garner.
